چکیده

In the domain of modular robotic systems, self-configura‐ tion, self-diagnosis and self-repair are known to be highly challenging tasks. This paper presents a novel fault selfdiagnosis strategy which consists of two parts: fault detection and fault message transmission. In fault detec‐ tion, a bionic synchronization ‘healthy heartbeat’ method is used to guarantee the high efficiency of the exogenous detection strategy. For fault message transmission, the Dijkstra method is modified to be capable of guiding the passage of fault messages along the optimal path. In a modular robotic system, fault message transmission depends mainly on local communications between adja‐ cent modules, so there is no need for global broadcast information. Computational simulations of one system form, M-Lattice, have demonstrated the practical effective‐ ness of the proposed strategy. The strategy should be applicable in modular robotic systems in general.

Editorial: Special Issue on Self-Reconfiguring Modular Robots

This Special Issue contains 13 papers that cover the most recent advances in the area of self-reconfiguring modular robots. Self-reconfiguring robots are modular robots that can change their morphology and topology. Each module is a robot by itself. These systems promise great flexibility compared to fixed-shape robots. By keeping the design of each individual module relatively simple and throu...

Distributed reconfiguration of 2D lattice-based modular robotic systems

We prove universal reconfiguration (i.e., reconfiguration between any two robotic systems with the same number of modules) of 2-dimensional lattice-based modular robots by means of a distributed algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first known reconfiguration algorithm that applies in a general setting to a wide variety of particular modular robotic systems, and holds for both s...

Evaluating efficiency of self-reconfiguration in a class of modular robots

In this article we examine the problem of dynamic self-reconfiguration of a class of modular robotic systems referred to as metumorpkic systems. A metamorphic robotic system is a collection of mechatronic modules, each of which has the ability to connect, disconnect, and climb over adjacent modules. A change in the macroscopic morphology results from the locomotion of each module over its neigh...

Hardware design of modular robotic system

In this paper we describe detail of hardware design of novel self-reconfigurable robotic system. We have classified previous studies on self-reconfigurable robotic systems into “lattice type” composed of spatially symmetric modules and “string type” like snake robots. The proposed system has both the advantages of simple operation of self-reconfiguration of the former and motion generation abil...

An LPV Approach to Sensor Fault Diagnosis of Robotic Arm

One of the major challenges in robotic arms is to diagnosis sensor fault. To address this challenge, this paper presents an LPV approach. Initially, the dynamics of a two-link manipulator is modelled with a polytopic linear parameter varying structure and then by using a descriptor system approach and a robust design of a suitable unknown input observer by means of pole placement method along w...
